about the artist

Joy's most recent series of paintings are a combination of washes and deep texture. The washes are reappearing in Joy's work after many years as a watercolorist. The texture is a part of her natural expression in the creation of each painting.
Joy has always observed landscapes and seascapes, their beauty and diversity, as she traveled throughout the United States and many European countries. Recently, she included botanical treasures as she observed her surroundings while traveling.

Texture is the most important element in Joy's art. It is derived by the application of model paste and other mediums to the drawing on the canvas. Templates and a variety of materials are then pressed into the wet surface in order to create the desired effect, the areas are then allowed to dry.

Staining and layering of color is the next most important element in Joy's art. Each layer of color is allowed to set and dry for 24 hours. Between each layer of color, the areas are sanded, scraped, and in other ways distressed in order to manipulate the texture. The numbers of layers range from 10 to 20 or more, on each canvas. Upon close observation, the viewer can delve deep into the surface of each canvas, discovering the many layers.

These techniques have been developed by the artist over the past 50 years.
